STU Debating Team won 2nd Runner-up & Best Speaker in 2021 China Universities Debating Championship (CUDC) South China Regionals
From 14th to the 16th of May 2021, the China Universities Debating Championship (CUDC) South China Regionals was held online. This championship was supervised by China National Committee for Translation & Interpreting Education and held by the Center of China Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters (CATTI). Over the weekend, the 56 debating teams from prestigious universities like University of Macau, Wuhan University, Central South University and Sun Yat-sen University competed in this competition.
Mr. Collin Tham from the English Language Center (ELC) of College of Liberal Arts (CLA) led 2 student debaters to participate in the championship. After several rounds of tight competition, the debaters Shi Zehan (Baz, a junior from the Chinese Program) and Chen Xuefei (Sophia, a junior from the program of International Business and Trade) won the 2nd Runner-up, and were successfully admitted to the national grand-final of this championship. In addition, the debater Shi Zehan was awarded the “Best Debater”.
China Universities Debating Championship has been held for 22 years. It is widely recognized as one of the top English debating competitions in China’s higher education institutions. In 2019, the STU debating team won the first prize and the “Best Debater” award in the South China Regionals. This
year, the STU debaters have made another breakthrough in this championship.
